When to vacation/fish North MN

My father and I take a trip from Nebraska to Pelican Lake at Orr every year at openers and have great fishing then. This year we got pushed back. We will be going sometime in Aug or Sept. Any recommendations on when to go. What will the weather be like?(we'll be fishing for bass)Any late summer/fall techniques to use?

I'd lean toward Sept. when the fall bite kicks in. From Orr, you're a short drive to Vermillion, Ash Lake and Ash River Trail.

well I have good news and bad news. A good friend of mine that fishes pelican alot just got back and he said he has never seen more weed on the lake. Almost could not fish, water intakes kept on getting plugged and fishing was not good. I'm sorry to say I think your going to have a hard time fishing pelican untill late in the year when the weeds start to die. Thats the bad news the good news is there are good lakes around ash is good and myrtle can be good. one of the best and by far the most scenic is kabetogama in Voyageurs National Park it's about 30 miles north of orr. How big of a boat do you have or are you renting one. I know the area well and might have more information for you. If I were going as far as Orr, I'd just keep going to Kabetogama or Rainy. The fishing can be great, and the beauty and camping is second to none!

I would have to also concur about Kab or Rainy in the fall. I have been to Orr/Pelican and had a great time but if it is the fall and your choices are Kab Rainy or Orr, Orr is third choice. JMO

That sounds dissapointing. I've fished the lake every year for 6 years now but usually early in the year and there hasn't ever been a weed growth problem. I've gotten to know it well and have caught a ton of fish. I have a 16 foot Starcraft fishing boat with 75 hp motor. When does it start getting cold up there? I can put it off for a bit(late sept. or early oct. but would like a bit of decent weather to enjoy for the week. 60's would be perfect.

late sept. into early oct. would be your best bet. Mid sept. hunting season opens and a lot of people start hunting which makes the lake all yours. By the end of sept. fishing starts to heat up as the water cools. It might be cool in the morning sometimes even frost but it warms up quick and if you come in early oct. the leaves will be turning. One of the best times to be on the water. As a reminder some of the resorts close at the end of sept. so be sure to check with were your planning on staying
