I started hunting in 98' by myself with one guy, skunked first 2 yrs. Either of us knew what we were doing. By 2001 I was shooting at least 2 a year and seeing way more. the late 90's were tough in woods country. Getting tough again the last 2 yrs.

Something else to consider. Being able to see deer is a learned experience. Most hunters just starting out will notice that they don't see as many deer as others hunting the same area. We have to train our brains to pick out the target from among the background.

I remember this happening when I first started showshoe hare hunting in the winter. My buddies were seeing and getting hares everywhere and I was not. After a few hunting weekends with them I too started to see them. I got to the point I could pick out an eyeball or the tip of an ear. The same is true for deer hunting. Ever notice how some guys just seem to have a knack for seeing more deer? They've trained their brains to pick out an eyeball, leg, even the tips of antlers from among the brush.

Not seeing deer doesn't mean they aren't there.

Good tip BobT, also not pushing APR or QDM here but you also see a lot more deer if you don't blast the first one that shows up. They can be really fun to watch for a while and you can learn a lot more by watching then shooting.

I would agree with that. For one thing it can train your brain to see their colors and shape. Plus, once they catch sight of your presence, remain dead still and enjoy the show. I've about busted a gut laughing at some of the antics deer will go through when they know you're there but haven't identified you as a threat yet. Had one dancing a jig 10 yards from me last fall. Saw her heading my way across corn stubble so I ducked down behind a small bush about 2' tall along the fence of my alfalfa field. That was the only place I had to hide and it wasn't much. She got to within 10 yards before she realized there was something there. The rest was a gas.

Now it might depend on the area, it seems some areas still hold a lot of deer while others have a much lower population then the boom years of 2003 to 2007.

If you guys are happy with what you are seeing and shooting by all means keep it up. I would just try to keep an eye on things in your area, the DNR uses a very broad brush to control the population which they have to do, I just like to take a little more personal responsibility in my hunting areas and shoot does where the populations are healthy and only target bucks or more specifically mature bucks where the populations are lower.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
