Got a couple more last night!

Recommended Posts

I got home from my oldest son's basketball game last night and since I'm going to play hookey from work until next Tuesday I decided to try for an all nighter then head to work this morning. I must be gettin old because it just about killed me and were heading back out tonight for round 2.

I got out around 11 P.M. and thought I'd try a spot I hadn't hunted for a year or so. I set up on the South side of an East/West snowmobile trail. I had a rolling field to the North and a large stand of pines to the NW. I was facing SE with a light SW wind. I wasn't to far from the road as the snow was so crunchy. I started with distress with low volume and 20 second on then off twice and looked to my left and there he was. Nice male red. I slowly got the gun moved and dropped him at 70 yards. 35 minutes to spare, as fox closed at midnight. I kept calling and had numerous packs howling in all directions. I thought I better get him in the truck before midnight and headed a mile South and tryed it agian.

I Parked a long an East/West farm lane along a powerline. Big open/foggy field to the North and another field to the South with a long spruce thicket running North/South about 100 yards to the SE.

I set out ruffy about 20 yards East of me and sat up tight to a power pole. I did a few long howls and had immediate response from several areas. I sat for 20 minutes without seeing anything then did one more howl and had a group sound off right on the other side of the trees. I swung over and waited but nothing showed. Tried distress on low, nothing. So I put on pup distress and let er buck. I look over and I see 3 standing there watching the decoy. I look through the scope, fogged up. I give it the quick wipe and draw down on one and drop the big male. The others took off and proceeded to give me a tounge lashing for 20 minutes as I headed back to the truck. Tried one more spot but saw nothing then the fog got real bad so I headed for home. A buddy from work and Mitch will be out with me tonight so hopefully I can get Jeff his first.
