Wont go into 4x4

Recommended Posts

Was driving off the lake yesterday in 4x4 and it just came out of 4x4 and wont go back in. I do have 2 wheel, but no 4 high or low. It sounds like its trying to go in but wont go all the way in. Its push button, when you push for 4 high or low the light just keeps flashing. I have tried in neutral, in gear, moveing slow, but no go.

Its a 96 Silverado 1\2 ton 350

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Bad switches. I just had a rebuilt front differential put in my 05 Z71. When I got it back it did the exact same thing! Took it back and they ended up taking the switches or whatever out of my old front differential. Have not had a problem since. It only took an hour so not sure if it's a big deal or not.

Not sure when they changed styles, but the front differential actuators were sometimes the problem in the early 90s. They did an update around that time for the pickups Subs and Tahoes. Its an easy fix IF thats the problem, and usually run between 75 and 125 depending on where you buy.

Take the actuator out of the front diff. Plug it back in and put the vehicle in 4x4. You will be able to see the actuator move out if its working. 96 was a transition year you could have the old wax style or the electric actuator.
