Nightcrawlers

gone fishn

Recommended Posts

Well, all this rain we are getting is good for something. I was out last night and got about 250 crawlers in 1 1/2 hours. Anybody else go crawler hunting?
Any tips you could share.
One thing I found was covering the flashlight with a red cover. That light doesn't seem to bother them as much.

A headlamp works nice for collecting nightcrawlers. You can get ones that switch between a red LED and a regular beam.

Also, if you should collect a large quantity of nightcrawlers, make sure you have some kind of bedding for them--even just for that night. If you try to put a bunch of nightcrawlers in a container without bedding for even a short time, they will burrow holes through each other and you will have a disgusting mess.

Picked 6 dozen last nite to suppliment my previous 4 doz. The red cover doesn't scare them like the bright white lite does, but I have trouble seeing them that way . I just try to hit them with the edge of the light so they don't spook. Then I leave the rest for seed, so to speak. That should do me as long as I can keep them in good shape.

We always pick during the day. Lay the hose down to soak the ground after you mow it short. The sun provides plenty of light to see and it's natural to the worms, so it doesn't bother them. Never have had any problems catching enough. Only problem is that it's easier for people to see you wandering around with your nose at your knees studying the lawn. But who cares, you got free bait.

Yeah I picked 16 dozen last week. I'll probably get out again if we get some more rain this week. Gotta stock up for vacation as well as the rest of the summer.
