West central MN weed eyes

Right now pitchin' jigs/soft plastic combo's and casting cranks is putting some decent fish in the boat for me. This fish came out of 10' of water and smacked the heck out of the bait. Just ask Randy Flink and his son Alex visiting from Texas this past Saturday. Too bad the weather wasn't a little nicer! Nav

Yes those weed walleyes.

Generally this bite is good all year. Plus relatively few people target these fish. I'd say that 80% of my walleyes came out of 10 ft or less of water during the day last summer. Targeting the weedgrowth is the key whether trolling cranks, pitch jigs or fishing livebait.

If you see a beat up old Lund predator with a 60 hp merc it will likely be me. Working the shallows on a lot of the same water you fish Nav. Stop by and say hi.

The pics are from two different lakes, both of which right now are ultra clear! And yep, stained or clear water the fish will be weed related. I've never tried beetle spins, at least not yet. I can see where the extra flash from the spinner would be a hit in stained water. Nice tip!

Understood. My extra-special walleye spinner uses a #2 Colorado pro-eye blade that Jann's Netcraft used to sell. It's a 3 color blade that really looks great. I also use 1/16 ounce quality jigs with painted eyes that I buy at either at the Sportsman Show in Minneapolis or Kapras (I don't know where else to get these jigs). A 2" lime green Apex swirltail grub rounds it out. I've caught so many walleyes out of the weeds with this combo that I can't even begin to count.

Just out of curiousity, was this a stained water lake? I have excellent 'eye success in a number of smaller stained east central lakes working the weedlines with lime green (homemade) beetle spins. It's my favorite type of walleye fishing.

It's still going strong for pike and eye's in the weeds pitchin' plastics! Expect to pick up those pesky bass and crappies doing this also. The Sanders (Duane, Blake & Cory) crew caught fish all day on Wednesday.
