Sounds like two different problems to me as well.

To check the vent solenoid find the large hose coming out of the charcoal canister. On the other end will be the vent solenoid. Unplug it. Using jumper wires supply a power and ground to the two pins. If you hear it click see if you can breath through it. With no power the solenoid will be open. with power the solenoid should be closed.

For the tow/haul issue, I know that sometimes the wires in the steering column get messed up, especially if you use the tilt a lot on the steering wheel.

Had the tow/haul issue problem a couple years ago, turned out to be broken wires in the column.

I also have the P0449 code right now. I will have to check out the evap canister on mine too.

Sorry to hijack your thread Duckfarr.

Had the evap vent solinoid off mine tonite, seems to be closed all the time. There is a odvious "click" when I put power to it but it never opens. That vent solinoid is more expensive than I expected though, $147!

Ive been doing some digging on the internet and it seems my $147 price might not be correct. It seems the one that is $147 includes the entire line to the evap canister, which I dont need or want. Not sure if the picture is a generic one or not but the one offered without the line doesnt look like the one I took off.

Any thoughts?

They gave you the update kit not just the valve.

The valve alone should have been under 30 bucks

(GM part # 25932571 is the one I believe, but not positive)

That is the way it seems, seems like this is a pretty common problem but mine made it 11 years and 188,000 miles. I see no reason to spent an extra $110 for the updated one.

All the update kit does is relocate the vent solenoid to a higher location to help reduce the possibility of it getting plugged with off road debris. If you an average driver that never really gets muddy or never drives through a snow bank you should be fine. It's not like GM only has this part fail in the trucks. Its across the board and yet none of the other models have an update kit?

just got done replacing the vent solenoid and works just fine, the tow button was a broken wire it is orange with 2 smaller white wires in side it spliced another wire on it and reran the wire where it was not going to get cut or pinched . Took about an hour and half of that was figuring out how to get the column apart "it just snaps apart " no screws .

So thanks for all the help.

I also put a vent solenoid on mine, took care of the P0449. Used the part # Mac gave. Looks like the same solenoid but the filter and the fitting for the filter are a little differnet. The new filer is round intead for rectangle so I accually had the put the filter and the solenoid above the frame seperately and assemble them there (wouldnt fit through the opening as a unit). Also had to modify the bracket a to get it all to fit. All in all well worth the work to save $170! ($30 for this one VS $200 for the relocated one).

Thanks again for the help!

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
