Fishing License for Military Personell

Sort of an odd question but I figured there's probably a few guys here with some insight.

Do members of the military who are not currently MN residents need a MN Fishing license? I know if they are MN residents they don't, but I wasn't sure about they don't live here.

A buddy of mine from high school is coming back to MN in a couple of weeks. He grew up here, but now lives on a base in Tennessee. When he's here he really wants to go ice fishing. I'm taking him, but I wanted to see if he needs a MN fishing license or not...

Thanks

If you are Active Duty Military you can still be a "Resident" of MN and live out of state. Does he still have a MN DL? Does he pay MN taxes? Those are what determine resident status for military on Active Duty out of state. If he still has a MN DL and pays taxes he can fish and hunt for free with leave papers. If he changes his residence to say Florida so he doeesn't have to pay taxes then he will have to purchase a non resident fishing licence. I did it for 20 years while in the USAF. Please tell him thank you for his service.

Angling - military ®

Description:

This is a free license for a resident that is in the armed forces of the United States, stationed outside the state, and home on leave.

No license is required and therefore the following application does not need to be completed unless you are also requesting one of the required license. Proof of MN residency and official leave and/or discharge papers must be carried while fishing.

Thanks Ziesmer. I would imagine he's no longer a MN resident, although it's not something I've ever asked him. He's been in for about 15 years and has been stationed a few places. He's been in Tennessee for a few years now and I would imagine that's where his official residence is.

He was wounded and is home now. I'll be sure to thank him for his service, but if I were a real friend I'd probably send him out with someone else who will actually put him on some fish laugh

I am in the military and was stationed in Minnesota for 5 years during college. I was not a resident, but since I was stationed in the state, I was able to get the resident rate. If he is on leave and still has a Minnesota drivers license, then he does not need a license during that leave period. If you go that route, make sure he keeps a copy of his leave papers in his wallet when he is fishing. Hope this helps.
