Vexilar FL-20 First Use!

Recommended Posts

Had the new FL20 Ultra Pack with the tri beam transducer out for the first time this weekend, that is one sweet unit! I sold the Marcum LX3 in order to buy the vex, what a difference. In my opinion the vexilar was a much better unit. The marcum would always "flutter" when I had a tiny jig on in over 20' of water, the vexilar had a nice solid line the whole time. Colors were much nicer, the night mode was great to look at. Vexilar hands down.

Random question for you guys with FL 20s, as I am a Humminbird man myself. My step dad has 2 FL 20s and only one of them has a dual beam ducer. On the unit that has dual beam, the switch is located underneath the unit head. There is no such switch on the other FL 20, and for some reason, I thought the FL20s being a "top of the line unit" would be standard with a dual beam transducer, but apparently not. The strange thing is the unit without the dual beam is newer than the unit that does have the dual beam. Does anyone know why this would be?

You can get FL-20s in different ducer configurations, if memory serves, and that affects the price. Mine was a phenomenally smokin deal, and came with a 12-degree, which I immediately replaced with a 9/19. Now I have the 12 as a backup.

thanks steve, i appreciate the insight! that is kind of what i figured. I have used the FL20 before and never had problems with using just the 12 degree transducer one.

However, as a business major I must admit that in order for Vexilar to keep up with Humminbird, they are going to have to start offering the dual beam ducer standard on the "top of the line units", as Humminbird offers this with all of their units, even the most basic/cheapest models. The last thing I would want to do after spending $550 on a Vexilar is spend another $80 on a transducer because the one that came with the unit is not a dual beam.

Well, I spent WAY less on my new FL-20. gringrin

But I agree with your point. If I was buying a new on-ice flasher right now, it'd be a 'Bird.

Ya I'm not sure what my step dad paid for his FL20s. Just for the sake of the argument, I googled "vexilar FL 20" and clicked on one of the first links I saw and found a price and used that. I was just trying to make a point.

And I completely agree with you Steve. If I was to buy a new flasher, it would be a bird as well.

i think you are missing my point. i know and completely understand that vexilars have the option to purchase with a dual beam or tri beam transducer, BUT they don't come standard with it.

when on vexilars HSOforum and you click on the FL20, either the pro pack or ultra pack and click purchase, it automatically comes with the 12 degree single beam transducer. i'm not saying, i'm just saying

rk, Jake made the point earlier in the thread that, in order to compete with top-line 'Birds, which do come standard with dual-beam ducers, Vex needs to make a dual-beam or tri-beam standard on the FL-20 as well, instead of an option. I think you just missed that part. smile

Effective this season, the Duel beam is done. There will only be single beam packages, and tri-beam packages. The Vexilar duel beam is now discontinued. All Fl Series units, 8, 12, 18, 20, and 22HD, can be purchased with the Tri-Beam if one wishs, just as they were in the past with Duel Beams. Or in a single beam, your choice.

But you will get the same retail package now in the tri-Beam at the retail price the duel beam package was before...so the value has been enhanced to the consumer.

The Vexilar web site, and most on line vendors are nearly always a bit higher than retail. This is common practice to give retailers a helping hand, an incentive.

There are packages and price points in the Vexilar FL Series that start at $299.99 and go up to the Ultra Pack FL-22HD. They are set to offer many options and configurations to fit the needs of the customer and there individual personal budget demands.
