Selecting the correct Ice House size..

I'm in the middle of doing the lay out of my Ice House. I originally wanted a 8x16 or 8x18 V front. I'm also gonna use it for work while on the road. But I'm told that I will loose room cuz 4ft of it will be 6ft interior, and to go with 6.8x16. Any ideas would be great....

thanks

I'm not the one building it so I'm not sure they do a 8.5 maybe only a 8ft. I honeslty would rather deal with the wheels coming into the house vs on the outside and having a smaller interior. Just looking to see who has what and if its that big of a difference.

My house is 8 wide 19 long including the v front. Plenty of room and the wheelwells make for a great shelves. I live in mine on the road also all winter. I have a 48 inch lower bunk and 40 inch upper. Haven't put any cabinets in yet. I didn't like the thought of being able to touch both walls - so I stayed away from the 6.5s.

I think thats what I am worried about... that little extra means alot... Im gonna go with Dinette table in back that folds down and a bunk above that, I was gonna add 2 additional bunks on the side as you come in the door but I might wait and add them my self if I want them.

I've had a winter and a half with my father's 6.5'x14' V front and there is not very much room. It only fishes two comfortably, three uncomfortably, and four...not possible with the set-up it has. I have dreams of a 8' wide wheelhouse! Maybe it's just me thinking the grass is always greener on the other side and the fish are ALWAYS on the opposite side of the lake from where the access is, but I've been in the 8' wide houses and it's a BIG difference!

Yep- normal batteries and I second the rechargeable ones- saves a lot of wasted cash over time.

A couple of other things. The ones with the strap over the top of the head and battery pack in the back are much more balanced and comfortable in my opinion- you don't even know its there. It's also nice to get one with an normal light and LED, or just a really good LED one so you can save battery life. I like the ones with a white light and another color like green or red so you don't always lose your night vision when you have to use it for a few seconds.

You still shouldn't have to pay more than 30-40 for a good one though if you shop around.

I just sold my 6'6" x 14' Ice Castle Last week. I had it for 3 years and we have slept upto 4 people(really tight though). I am 6'3' and touched both ends across the back. That pretty much made my decision to what my next one was.

Well I also ordered a new 8'x 16' Ice Castle Spirit model and it will be here next week hopefully. That new one will sleep my family of 4 easily in the summer and fall months. Plus the cabinets and storage areas are awsome for all the junk I bring with.

In my mind there is NO question, get the 8' wide model.

I'm just finishing up my 8x16 +3 foot front v. If I was to do it again I would still go with a 6 1/2 foot wide.

We put two benches in the back. One behind both wheel wells. These will convert into a double bed for sleeping.

Half of the front v is for a bathroom. Then we put cabinets, range top and a refrigerator in the house.

Long story short. I don't think there is any spot in the house with more then 6 1/2 foot worth of walking distance. I could have built a 6 1/2 x20 and had almost as much usable space.

If you're buying one already made, then buy then 8 foot wide. If you're going to build...Then build a longer 6 1/2 and not have to deal with the wheel wells.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
