Dehydrator

Recommended Posts

Rather than ask in the pizza sauce thread, I'll ask here.

I've never had or used a dehydrator before.

I assume that they come in many different brands, sizes, so on and so forth.

I'd have to figure the size out on my own, but what brand(s) would you recommend? And what brand(s) to stay away from?

Thank you for your time.

If you get one of the round ones like you see in Wally World, do NOT buy one that rotates. I don't think it improves the drying any, PLUS the one I had like that burned up a motor and had to be tossed.

I just have an inexpensive Nesco American Harvest and it's perfectly fine for fruits and vegetables, though the vertical space between racks is limited if you're going bigger stuff. I think you really only need to consider spending bigger money if you're thinking about doing lots of dried meats, fish, and jerky.

I've got an Excaliber unit. I had a Nesco unit, but wanted something bigger with more options. The Excaliber has 10 trays and is rectangular instead on round. It also is variable temp, which helps doing different items. I've done a lot of veggies and herbs. The size and capacity are nice when you've got a bunch of stuff to do. I haven't tried jerky yet, but it's coming.
