Antepole and Mule deer

Recommended Posts

Would like to hunt both hopefully on the same hunt. (1.) Which area would be best for both? (2.) What is the latest I can apply? (3.) Can I do it on a very low budget? All help will be great. Looking to mount both for my Taxidermy display wall.

Wyoming is definately king for antelope numbers. I read a G&F HSOforum that said something about Wyoming having upwards of 500,000 statewide while other states had well less than 100,000. For instance, western ND only has 15-25,000 goats at any given moment. If I remember right New Mexico, Utah and Arizona have had the most P&Y/B&C entries, but have less overall numbers.

We've hunted antelope only in Eastern WYO the past 2 seasons. We did it ourselves on public land and on some private land, camping for free on forest service land one year and at a KOA the other. Including tags, I think we spent about $800/person for a buck and 2 doe. I don't know about muleys, but a large majority of zones in WY have over the counter goat tags.

We've checked with some outfiters that charge anywhere from $800-1200 per goat buck on their land, which includes room and board with everything else being extra. A buddies dad did the goat/muley thing and was successful with both. I don't think they were both trophies and I can't remember where they exactly hunted.

Montana might be another state to look at. Unless you have time to be patient to apply for tags or are looking to buy preference points, MT and WY might be a good start.
