Separating a ball joint from a steering knuckle.

Recommended Posts

I had been throwing some heat on it just not enough. I had started with the propane torch which apparently just didn't get it as hot as it needed to be. Tha MAP gas seemed to be what I needed.

Thanks again to all you guys.

I am leaving it alone until after Christmas (we have family at our house) but the next adventure will be pressing out the lower ball joint.

I just picked up a MAP torch myself and they do throw a lot more heat! smile

When you install the new ball joints put them in the freezer for a good while first. It may sound strange but it shrinks them a little and makes them go in easier. Just did ball joints in my suburban and did this along with cleaning up the hole were the ball joint goes and a little grease and it should go in without too much trouble. Good luck.

This has worked for me too. It doesn't seem like it would work but for several press fit things it has done the trick for me.

It is also worth it to either rent/buy a proper ball joint press. Think of how much $ your saving by doing it yourself even with the tool rental/purchase.

You can rent most ball joint presses for free with no charge most parts store make you put down a deposit that you are able to get back. the freezer trick works really slip with pinion bearings. Never really tried it with ball joints.

You can save alot of money by doing it yourself!!!
