art321
I recently bought an '05 Polaris 500 sportsman that was last used in CO. The guy still had it jetted for the high altitude. So far a web search has not helped me learn how to switch it out. He gave me the lower altitude jet. Any help before I go buy a manual or is just worth paying a shop to do it?Thanks
McGurk
Find a clymer's manual, get out your tools, and get those hands dirty! It's a gret way to get intimate with that new playmate of yours.
gr8icefishinmind
First off........how does it run right now? Cause if it runs fine there is no reason to mess with it!
Macgyver55
Cause if it runs fine there is no reason to mess with it! Not really true. High altitude jetting is much leaner than what we use here. It may run ok at slower speeds, but wide open throttle would most likely do damage to the piston and cylinder. I wouldnt recommend it. If he gave you the original jets its as easy as pulling the carb, turn it over, remove the bowl, and replace the main and pilot jets. Put it back together!Basically a 1/2 to 1 hour job that will save a big head-ache later.
aitkin
If you where over 3000ft you will want to rejet it and I would check with the dealer I had to change clutch weights also.

rundrave
its not that bad of a job, it will take you longer to get to the carb (taking off plastic etc) then it will to change the jets.take the bowl off the bottom of the carb, you should see 2 jets. the main jet is the obvious big one that is right under the drain plug. the pilot is the one recessed in a hole about 1/4 inch. It takes a really small flathead to get at it, be careful not to strip it.the pilot is a 40, the main is a 155 i believe. I would also recomend to set the air screw somewhere around 4 to 4.5 turns out. when you think you got it done, do some plug chops with your spark plug and that should tell you if you are running lean or rich.also your clutch weights play no factor in the jetting, that will only change the rpm's of the clutch engagement
