Am i getting jobbed??

Recommended Posts

Had to have a front rack and pinion seal replaced on my 1995 jeep grand cherokee, 142,000 miles on it. It is the fulltime 4 wheel drive version. Then they said I needed a new drive shaft since the other one seized. Couldn't find one so they freed the other one and now it vibrates when i get around 60 mph. Brought it back to them today and they said they might have to replace the drive shaft now? Does this sound right??? If so, what should be the cost for a used drive shaft and to put it in. And doesn't it even need to be replaced or can i live with the vibrations?

Many thanks,

BHS

Sounds more like the u joints in your drive shaft, had that happen to me a while ago the drive shaft would have to be removed but it should not be bad. May be they put in the wrong size u joints. Did they replace them when putting it back togther? Good luck

How much did they ask to do the job ?

I just replaced all the u-joints in my Dodge 2500 and it cost me $ 300. I took shaft off, brought it to the local Na pa Shop, they pressed out old joints and installed new joints ones.

Oh, It finally dawned on me that they put in a pinion seal not a rack and pinion seal. It doesn't have a rack it has a gear box so I couldn't figure out what you where talking about. The seal on the front differential where the drive shaft bolts to it is the Pinion seal not a rack and pinion seal.

If its the c.v style shaft and the CV part is bad a reman will run you around the $400 mark. If its the double ujoint in the rear that's the problem they can be sent to a driveline specialty shop to have the u-joints replaced.
