Verizon announces tiered data plans.

As reported earlier in October, Verizon Wireless has introduced new tiered data plans for both cellphones and now tablets. The plans are close to what was predicted earlier, and include a new lightweight $15 per month, 150MB plan that will cost another $15 for another 150MB used, with a $30 unlimited plan still available. The pricing gives less data than AT&T on the low end but doesn't impose the same 2GB cap of AT&T's maximum $25 plan.

A $1.99 per MB pay-as-you-go option is also there, but only for feature phones and not 3G smartphones.

There are four 3G Tablet plans, kicking off with a $20/1GB plan and moving to $35/3GB plan $50/5GB plan and a previously unmentioned $80/10GB range-topper. All but the $20 plan, which charges $20 per 1GB of overage, have a $10-per-GB overage fee. AT&T doesn't yet have dedicated tablet plans outside of the iPad, which costs $15 for 250MB and $25 for 2GB but is available on an as-you-go plan.

Only two netbook/notebook, MiFi 2200 and Five Spot Mobile hotspot plans exist and mimic the last two tiers of the tablet plans. The two hotspot options have a $35/3GB plan with $10-per-GB overage rate as part of a limited 90-day promo.

The pricing hasn't been explained by Verizon but is likely there to help drive down the cost for only occasional data users or those trying to save money in the current economy.

Nice to see they kept the unlimited plan. smile

That is funny. My son has had a $9.99 per month data plan (I am sure after added in charges brings it to $15.00) now since I got him his touch screen middle of the road phone a couple months back. Maybe that is diffrent than this? He is restricted to only certain websites like You Tube, Facebook, Google and I know can go over on data usage (had an issue the first month smirk ). Is this something maybe above my sons plan? I do recall it was either the one he has (had to get something data to have a smart phone) or unlimited. No middle ground.

No kids should have any data plans unless they are paying their own bill!

I didn't even get my first cell phone until I was 18. It makes me sick when I see these kids that are maybe 10 walking around with a cell phone! What is this world coming to?

I saw trick or treaters last night who were trick or treating with no costume. I gave them two pieces of candy and they looked at me like [PoorWordUsage]?

When I was a kid I was lucky to get a popcorn ball or 1 piece of candy! mad

I think Verizon has a simple 9.99 plan for non-smartphones. Maybe that is what you are referring to.

It is a Samsung Reality and they did consider it a smartphone and to upgrade you needed to have a data plan. They pushed hard to get that $30.00 extra a month plan, but my mother in-law (who in conjugation with my wife got, activated, and pays for) who pays for it would not let that fly because if one grand son get it, all of them get it.

I see on my nephews Ally his $9.99 plan from August changed also:

Might as well go unlimited or get them one of 3 no smartphones they stiff offer. As my MIL and wife found out month number, after stern verbiage was dealt, they go over and you end up paying $50.00 a month. They get you coming or going IMO. grin

When I was a kid some kids had a Haro or Redline, while others had a Huffy. Some kids had a N.E.S. and others had Pong. Some kids had Gerbeau jeans, while others had to peel the label off of a pair of Wranglers. Life as a kid is just cruel some times. grin

The wife and I (both 38) are still using a blush"tracphone" blushwith NO APPS. And yet we seem to get through life just fine?? crazy And mine only ever has 40-60 minutes to use, mainly for roadside emergencies.

Shack, I got the Samsung Reality a couple months ago and Verizon considered it a multi-media phone and I only needed a $9.99 data package that included 25MB for checking email and casual web use (weather radar, etc). Now with the new $15 data plan it looks like they have done away with the $9.99 plan. I was able to keep my old Alltel plan so I am not paying as much as the Verizon plans. Verizon is getting high priced now for the casual data user, everything is geared toward big minute and high data useage. I have 2 lines on my contract and never use more than 200 minutes because most calls are to other Verizon or made in the evening or weekends. The smallest Verizon plan is 700 minutes and I would never use anywhere near that. Glad I could keep my Alltel plan.

Truer words haven't been spoken my friend! We don't have smart phones, but I did unlimited on everything because we use the heck out of our phones.
