Thinkin about tyring WI for spring turkey hunting

Recommended Posts

I've hunted MN for the last 5-6 years. I only get to hunt here every other year because of the lottery so I'm thinking about putting in to a few other states for more opportunities.

I've found some info on the WI DNR HSOforum about turkey sightings and public lands. What are things like in WI during turkey season and what are some tips for a guy who's never hunted Wi before?

Thanks for the help.

I've hunted Wisconsin since it's very first season way back in (I believe) 1980. Never hunted public land. Farmers/ranchers in WS are much more receptive to hunting than they are on this side of the river.

We have permission on 4 good farms in the area we hunt, and can remember only one or two places that have turned us down. Most HATE those darn birds! My advice is spend a couple nice weekends driving around the area you'd like to hunt, then start knocking on doors. You'll be surprized how easy it is. Many times a farmer will say "Gee, my nephew hunts, but when he's done, go ahead." or "Sorry, we've got hunters here, but I own another piece over...." or "How many do they let you take now?" or "My neighbor has a bunch on his place, he'll let ya hunt. Here, let me get you his phone#."

One think to remember is, as a non-resident, you will NEVER draw before the first weekend of May. (WS fishing opener) If you apply for then or later you will always draw a tag. Some of our best hunting has been the last couple weeks of the season because the pressure is so low.

Good luck and don't forget about the early season Twins games cutting into those hunting weekends. grin
