Droid X vs Droid 2

Recommended Posts

Some of you know some of you don't know, but my Touch Pro 2 decided to leap out of my lap one day and hit the pavement. The glass screen had the spiderweb effect. I ordered a new screen and after an hour of surgery my phone had its new screen in place. However, during surgery I had a little slip with a tool and I ended up breaking the digitizer.

So now my options are order a new digitizer and go through an hour of taking the phone apart and messing it up again or just buy a new phone.

I am eligible for an upgrade and I really love windows mobile, but they only have one windows mobile device I like so I am left to look at andriods as well.

I am leaning towards the droid 2 just for the fact it has a keyboard and I hate touch screen texting.

Does anyone on here have the droid 2?

Are there pros and cons between the Droid X and Droid 2?

the main difference appears to be screen size and a slid out keyboard.

Just wondering if you looked at the droid 2 and the droid X why did you chose the one you did?

A surgeon you are not?? smile

I would've looked hard @ the Droid 2 but it wasn't available when I bought my X.

But, I've gotten pretty used to the virtual keyboard, and the space it saves in the pocket sure is nice. Plus the speech to text and "Swype" have both came a long way.

A physical keyboard is nice, but I'm finding that I miss it less and less.

The Droid X has more powerful hardware under the hood. The Droid 2 is simply a slightly upgraded Droid. The Droid X is a fairly substantial upgrade.

That's interesting you say that....

Both phones are running on the same 1GHz OMAP CPU, and have 512MB of RAM. Both phones have 8GB of internal flash storage. The only difference was, the Andriod system was 2.1 for the X which I believe just got the update to 2.2, where as the droid 2 had 2.2 pre-installed.

Cosmetically is where the difference is..

The Droid X has a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display at 854x480. The Droid 2 is a little smaller with its 3.7-inch screen, but the resolution is the same. So you're looking at a slightly sharper screen on the Droid 2, but the Droid X will have that spacious feel that can only be had on these larger screen phones.

The Droid 2 is 0.54" thick compared to the Droid X at 0.4".

The Droid 2 looks like a very interesting phone. The internals are pretty much identical to the Droid X, but it offers the benefits of a physical keyboard, and a more manageable form factor.

3 mic system for recording video on X

The Droid X uses 4.3" WVGA, 854 x 480 resoltion.

The 720p you are speaking of is for the HD Video Recording option along with the 3 mic on your droid x

The batter life on the 2 appears to be more sufficient.

Droid X Usage Time up to 480 minutes..

Droid 2 Usage Time up to 575 minutes..

Droid X Standby Time up to 220 hours..

Droid 2 Standby Time up to 315 hours..

The HDMI output makes no difference to me as I will never use it.

Still they are MINOR differences, and it seems to me the biggest is the size of the phone and the keyboard. After seeing the droid X in your hands darren it got me thinking droid 2 might be my answer? They weigh almost the same, enough to where I do not think anyone would notice a difference.

Droid X 5.47 oz Droid 2 5.96 oz

Another thing to note is that Android 3.0 is coming (sometime around New Year's). There really aren't any current phones that meet Google's recommended specs for running Android 3.0. Come Q1 2011, there will be much better phones on the market (likely with dual core, 1.5GHz processors. 1280x760 resolutions will be the norm on phone displays 4" and up. A lot more will be WiMAX and LTE ready).

Yep and after that, even better phones. grin

It sounds like you made up your mind already about the Droid 2. I say go for it. You can't go wrong with either one of them. By far the biggest difference is the keyboard.

Just don't be having any "screen envy" when we go fishing. wink

I can get the 2 or the X for 99.99 online. I printed off since I know online and in store are different. I am going to whine until they honor the online price. If not, I might just get a free bee phone and use it for a while and order a new digitizer for my touch pro 2.

As for screen envy... grrrr. Ive dropped that phone many times, even had someone spill a full beer on it. I guess when that happened I should have stayed home! Because my luck had run out frown

The thing with electronics is the upgrade path goes as follows:

Major minor minor minor Major minor minor minor Major minor minor....

If you are buying, you want to try to hit the Major if at all possible, then the first minor, second minor. If at all possible, you want to avoid buying during the last minor, particularly at the end of it. For Android phones, we are at that last minor. The same goes for Intel desktop processors right now. The iPhone 4 would be an example of a product on a major.

The underlying hardware that will be used in the next generation of phones has been available for some time. It's pretty obvious that the next batch of high end phones will use this new hardware. The new hardware, if fully utilized, is quite an upgrade.
