Gill netting tullibees.

I was wondering if there was any particular seasons/special regulations for netting tullibees? I know you have to buy a special tag/license to do so. What do you do with game fish/roughfish caught species besides tullibees? Are you able to harvest other roughfish considered species? I would be guessing it would be best after ice out, before ice, or during the ice so the water would be cool enough and they would not be eaten buy turtles. Any info would be great.

Not totally sure but i think you can only net them in the fall and usually i think after they spawn. You can catch them any time you want and keep them with a hook and line. Never done it before but i think they hang up a sign at the access of the lake when they open for netting.

I've been netting since I was a little kid. It's fun but cold and your vehicle smells like fish for weeks :0. Netting opens in the fall when the water temp reaches 40 degrees. You can only net on designated lakes and the DNR posts signs when they open it. The tullibee are coming into the rocks to spawn at this point. All game fish must be released. Sometimes you get some huge pike in your nets as they are feeding on the tullibee. They usually roll in your net and make a huge mess but they are pretty easy to get out and are never harmed. We smoke the tullibee and give them away to a lot of people. They are extremely tasty that way. Especially with an adult beverage. wink Hopefully this helps you out.

I did find which lakes they are allowed to be netted on and the season. Does anyone know a good spot to get some gill nets and what size is best for them? Any special depths good in the fall/winter? Can rough fish be kept? Tritonman, would you mind sending me an email at [email protected].? I have also smoked tullibees before and they are pretty good.
