Dumb question but................What are these "Snap Weights" that guys are talking

I keep seeing posts where people are referring to snap wieghts used for trolling.

What are they???

Hi Dr. Bob,

They are lead weights attached to a plastic part that pinches on your line for trolling. I sent you an email about them.

They are a weight that snaps onto your line to get cranks down deeper. Ypu can attach them at whatever lenth of leader you want and simply take them off when you have a fish on and the weight gets to the boat. The most common sizes are 1-5 oz.

Whats up buddy? Snap weights are a weight that clips on and off of your line as opposed to being tied in permenently. I use them quite a bit up here while pulling lures or spinners on the deeper flats. Most cranks will run about 30% or so deeper with a 1oz snapweight 20 foot or so ahead of the bait. When reeling in, you or your partner just disconnect the snap when it gets up near to the rod tip.

I'd sure like to make it out your way for that, I read the posts from last winter and I know you guys had a blast on Burntside. Let me know when you'll be rolling up this way come winter and we can maybe sit down somewhere one evening and have a cold snap-fizz and talk a bit. Maybe even haul out a portable and fish near your sleeper one day.

I put a snap swivel on the clip, then open the swivel to insert my line. Depending on the size of the snap weight used, heavy ones come off the line when reeling in a fish. On the smaller weights I reel to the weight, unclip the weight, let it slide down the line. The good thing about this is that you reduce the chance of loseing your snap weight, those things are expensive! The draw back is that you now have a heavy weight next to the fish's mouth makeing it easier to throw the hook. Keeping the line tight and the fish's head down will eliminate shake offs. Sometimes I keep my rod tip in the water to accomplish this.

Fisky - the Burtnside Bash will be the weekend of January 30th this year. I'll most likely head to Ely Saturday morning and spend the night.

Not sure yet on LOW plans other than I will be up with the whole famdamily for Presidents Day weekend. We will be staying with Gibbins Sleepers for 3 nights (can't wait). I am also going to put together a FM sleeper trip for March. It sounds like it will have a pretty good turn out so you'll have to join us for sure for that one.

I'll be making a couple of trips with the Otter too, so We'll have to try to hook up then also.

Another option is to use a nice floating rap or husky jerk and run just like you would a lindy rig...Make the leader 5-10 feet depending on you preference and boom...Walleye on.
