Lots of things will ease the itch. Try bactine spray or one of the anti-itch sticks. Hydrocortisone gels work to reduce the inflamation...may sound nuts, but use preparation H! Common household ammonia will cut the itch in a jif. The best though is to spray your socks with deet when you are going to be in bug territory....this prevents the need for other remedies. I'm cheap so I use the ammonia applied with a q-tip to the bite.

I got bit in Canada and my ankle swelled up too. The swelling went down in a day or so but the itching lasted a little longer. A few pf the locals up there told me to put ice on it. I'm not sure if it worked but I tried. Might be worth a shot? I would say use one of those itch sticks, they work real well for a lot of other bites.

Benadryl works well so you can get some rest at night. Just take it at bedtime, because it will put you into a short term coma.

For daytime use, Benadrayl also make a topical cream that kills the itch for a while.

CrappieTom has it right for the itch. Ammonia will do the trick, but it works best when applied right after the bite occurs. Don't be afraid to apply it a number of times over an hour or so.

Most "itch/bite sticks" have ammonia as an active ingredient.

I carry a bottle of Sting-Eze when outside. As soon as I am bitten I apply the Sting-Eze. The product seems to eliminate the after effect of the bug bit.
This will not eliminate the effects of the bit if applied the next day.

Try Dawn dish soap, the blue stuff, rub a little bit all over the bite, it works. I got bit 2 weeks ago by a horsefly, I have alot of allergies and obviously bites from horseflies is one of them. The darn thing swelled up and festered for about 10 days, now it scabbed over and is starting to go away.

All the previous posts have good info on how to treat an itch or avoid a bug bite in the first place. As for the swelling, I have found that soaking my ankle in a solution of epson salt and warm water does the trick for me. I hate horseflies worse than any other bug! They bite me on top of the foot and the swelling travels right up my calf muscle. I know what you are talking about-try the salt-TROY

Whew!

I feel lucky, somehow.

If I get stung by a bee, it will render the closest joints to the sting paralized, sore, and swollen for about 2 days.

But horsefly bites have never bothered me much more then the affects of a mosquitoe bite. Strange.......

About the Benedryl...Yes, works good. In regards to the temporary coma, it works good for that too. Can you say lights out?
