atv squating?

Rock Finder

Recommended Posts

I have a 2005 Polaris 400 sportsman. The rear end of it seems to squat way to much when I am on it and when I get off it doesn't come back up very fast. I am thinking the shocks are shot, or is there something else it might be?

Thanks

The shocks themselves have nothing to do with how much it squats. The purpose of shock absorbers is to stabilize the machine. The springs are what provide the lift. At any rate, ATV shocks typically come with the springs as an assembly and you should be able to adjust the spring tension as already mentioned. If not, I'd be looking for a broken spring. Fixing it may require replacing the shock too.

I adjusted the shock to the stiffest possible setting, it helped but I think there is something broke on it. I have owned it since it was new and it just started having the problem. I didn't notice anything broken when I was adjusting the shock, but then I don't know exactly what I would be looking for.

Thanks everyone for their input.

You might just need some new rear springs, it seemed like a few model years of sportsmans had soft springs from the factory. I have heavier ones on mine, bought from EPI in Brainerd. Highlifter also sells heavier rate springs. Pretty common problem.
