Microwave Issue

stick

Question

OK...I recently had a door clasp (one of the brackets on the door that engage in the body of the microwave and enable the switches to know the door is closed) break on my microwave. I tore the door assembly apart to get the clasp pulled out in order to get a replacement. I ended up tripping one of the door switches inside the body of the microwave, so I pulled the control pad off to get at it to correct this issue. I then put the unit back together (while still missing one of the door clasps) and the microwave would fire up. When it starts (with a bowl of water in it) the unit makes a ticking sound which sounds like the fan hitting something. This lasts for a few seconds and disappears. The microwave then runs for 25 seconds exactly and shuts off after a brief ticking again. This is repeatable.

Any thoughts on what it might be? I hope this narration isn't too confusing.

For what it's worth it is a Whirlpool model: GH7145XFQ-1.

No, but you need to be DARN (insert favorite colorful expletive) careful inside with a microwave. There is lethal high voltage and current inside, not to mention the risk of microwave radiation leak if things don't go back together just right so it's properly sealed up.

Ticking sound could be an electric arc jumping a gap of some sort...maybe.

I had several guys I know that are much more "Mr fixit" than I am tell me not to mess with Micros. You can really get hurt so I just took down the old one and put in the new one.

With the cost of a new one being so cheap, it is kind of hard to fix an old one. I recently replaced my above the range micro and got a smoking good deal by buying a demo unit at Home Depot. Was only like $70 bucks. Needed a good windex clean but it came with full warranty and stuff from HD so I took a chance on it and it is great.

I service resteraunt equipment, we service a pretty big range of them. As cheapily as they are made I would go get a new one. Often times once they are out of warranty most places wont spend the money to fix their "commercial" ones...unless its a real Large one...they tend to run at least 5 grand...theres one of them in every Subway...
