Cut Bullheads

I have been after my first channel cat all summer and have yet to get one. I live in the northwest metro and have been going to the Mississippi and trying different spots from shore. I have tried spots from the 694 bridge to Champlin with no luck. I originally used crawlers with no luck. I have read that cut suckers are the best for catching channel cats but haven't been able to catch them either. I know of a few spots where I can catch as many bullheads as I want. Will cut bullheads work for channels or should I buy large suckers and use them? Ideally I would like to be able to catch suckers but they are proving to be just as elusive as the catfish. Any advice?

I use cut bullheads all the time and they work fine. I like to use the smaller 4" to 5" bullheads for cut bait - just snip off the head and the tail with a scissors and use the bloody hunk of bullhead - it makes a perfect piece of cut bait.

I was just thinking of cut bullhead & Steve D on Saturday. I for another reason I had to dig some images up from a few years back:

I think he got two or three that night and has had some good runs reported on cut bullhead & walleyes posted before. grin Personally I would not use cut bullhead for targeting walleyes unless you are Steve D...

Channels? Heck yes!

Cut bullhead have been working great up in the Dayton area on the Crow & Miss I was told this past weekend. In response to this "new" found bait by one of my friends, I had to find & e-mail him these images of Steve and his cut bully walleye. grin

We use cut Bullhead all the time for Channels and it has worked well in the past. I cut the head off and snip the tail and then I take that nice bloody section that is left and cut it in half.

Otherwise I learned a tip from Steve D where he fillets one side then cuts the head and tail off and cuts the rest of the Bullhead in half. That fillet of Bullhead meat has worked well for me and I get one extra piece from a Bullhead.
