Minnkota Power Drive In-Line Fuse size?

muskielaw

Question

I have a 2001 Minnkota Power drive 74lb 24v system that came on a used boat I bought last year. This weekend it stopped working and so I took a look at the fuses and they were all blown. Not only were they blown but one of them had melted the fuse holder to the point that I have to splice in a new one. The fuses that were in there are 32v 40A and I am wondering if this is the correct size fuse or is it to big considering that it melted the housing before it blew? Thanks

I'd go with a 24v 50a manual reset circuit breaker. (The specs for your 74# thrust motor show a max amp draw of 45 amps. Standard school of thought say max amps + 10% for breakers and fuses.)

I don't know if it should be necessary to oversize the circuit breaker. If it is designed for the motor load, it should be designed to handle the motor inrush current. Ten percent over is not out of line though and I wouldn't be concerned about doing it as long as the motor cables are sized to handle a continuous 50A load.
