Yamaha 150 Prop Question

hugonian1

Question

The prop on my Yamaha 150 moves in and out on the shaft a good 1/8 to 3/16".

Everything is seated properly and tight.

Is this a normal tolerance or might something be missing?

I appreciate the advice.

I've never expeienced that on any of my motors. I would think the prop should be tight back and forth cause any change in speed or rpm's is going to cause it to slide on the shaft and maybe start wearing on the splines. Sure the spacer washers are on the front and back sides of the prop. Only thing that i can think of if the nut is tight.

I have a yamaha and there should be a spacer on the back of the prop, then the prop, another spacer, then the nut and cotter pin. When I had the prop off the first time (probably just cause it hadn't been off in awhile) the back spacer stuck to the prop and I didn't realize it was there till it fell off when I was putting it back together.

If it stuck on when you took it in it probably fell off somewhere along the line and nobody noticed it.

Based on looking at a few different years and models of Yamaha 150 engines on the Yamaha America online parts system, it looks like there are actually three spacers/washers.

One behind the prop that appears specially shaped and fairly thick..more than the play you mention, then two on the outside of the prop - again, one fairly thick and then a thinner one sort of like a plain washer. Given the amount of play you mention, it sounds like the smaller washer may be missing.

This picture should help. Can't say they're all like this, but the three different ones I looked at had a similar stackup.

Thanks for all the input.

Here is what was determined.

All the parts were there and in the proper order, that is what threw me.

On my way up to Winni for a week of fishing I stopped by Hallbergs Marine to see what they thought. This is not where I bought the boat from.

The guy in the parts department went out of his way to help me out.

Long story short, evidently when you buy a new boat with a new Yamaha motor you should not assume the motor has the actual Yamaha prop on it. Mine did not, but it had the Yamaha thrust washer which did not work properly with the after market prop. They said they have seen this before so he knew exactly what to look for. Sounds like a way for a dealer to save a few bucks at the expense of the customer.

Hallbergs set me up with the proper parts and I was on my way. I can't thank them enough.

There does not appear to be any damage caused by this which is good.

This is just 1 more of a bad sequence of events that followed my new boat purchase.

It is Crystal clear who I won't be doing business with in the future, although that problem seems to be resolving itself.

Thanks again for your assistance in helping me figure this out.
