Bear

There has been a bear in my yard the last few nights. He took down the bird feeders and was even brave enough to come right on my deck and take down a few more. I'm not really surprised, I should know better to take the feeders in at night. Are there any tricks to keeping bears out of the yard, or at least out of the feeders? I just hate taking the feeders in and out everyday, especially because I need a step stool to get some of them. I'm also in the process of building a compost, has anyone had trouble with bears getting into their compost bins? Thanks~

They aint the brightest creatures.. We havea lot of problems with them up at our cabin.. Bottle rockets in their direction make em pretty excited.. but you have to catch them in the act.. Really hard to bear proof anything.. if you can get your bird feeders on the roof,, thats worded best for us.. But not as easy to fill the feeders.. and the birds make a mess.... .but not as big a mess as the bears tearing down the feeders.,

If you put spent household greens and food in the compost, like most of us, the bears will go for that sometimes. No real way to bearproof a compost pile. You can leave it out as an open pile so the bear has nothing to tear apart to get at it.

I know one guy outside Ely who has a feeder attached to a pulley wheel, with the pulley wheel mounted 20 feet up on a flagpole. In the evening he raises the feeder up close to the pulley and lowers it again in the morning. Works great for him.
