Riding mowers (what engine?)

ripper

Question

In the market for a riding mower and would like some feedback on engines. Looking at Cub Cadets (mainly because they carry 3 yr warranties as opposed to 2 on JDs and others). Depending on what retailer you buy from you get different engines. HD it's Kawasaki, Tractor Supply it's Briggs and Stratton and others offer Kohlers. All have a 3 year warranty thru Cub Cadet. I know this is a Ford/Chevy thing but curious. Leaning towards Kawasaki...

We have had a Dixie Chopper in the family for 15 years. It has the 18 or 20HP turbo Kohler on it and we have had absolutely no problems with the motor. We mow about 7 acres once a week during the season. Not to mention the first half of it's life was in use as a commercial mower, being used almost every day.

Can't vouch for the other brands, but our 420 JD has also been reliable, although not perfect, granted that mower must be approaching 30 years in age.

Hi, I am a small engine mechanic for 10 years. I work for a large lawn care with 20 or so mowers. I would say that they are all good engines. They are only as good as your maintenance.

i would take the kawi without thinking twice. they make a great engine... we've had alot of problems with kohlers at work they seem to burn alot of gas and have alot of small issues... go with the kawi and dont look back. the briggs are ok but there pretty noisy IMO
