Great Success MN/WI ofer

Sturg

Recommended Posts

I hunted MN and WI this year with friends and family for a parts of 15 days and numerous seasons. We went 4/5 in MN and 0/3 in WI.

WI

We hit the stretch of bad weather in WI. Wednesday was blowing hard, Saturday had snow, rain, sleet, rain and some late afternoon sun. Sunday was 31 degrees to start but the sun was shining and the gobblers were finally singing their songs! I got a great strutter doing his stuff at 12 yds and I shot low with the bow. I'm thinking the heavy coat I was wearing changed my form. I even missed him low on the second shot at 15 yds. He didn't care to try round three. Maybe next year! I was the only one(of three) to see a tom in WI. Tough hunt but fun! Found our first morels!

MN

C Season-

My nephew got his first turkey two hours into the hunt. He came in spitting and drumming. He asked me if it was a car engine! Nice 20 lb two year old bird.

D Season-

longtime turkey hunting partner took a jake one hour into his hunt. He got skunked the year before so he was happy to take the biggest of four that came in an hour into the hunt.

E Season

The tom was gobbling as I crossed the field in the dark two hundreds yds west of the blind. I put the decoys out, got back in the tent and his next gobble he was out in the field. I called softly once and he came right in. Fastest hunt I've ever had. My sixth longbeard with the bow!

G season

Took a kid in a single mom home who wants to try hunting. Last year he missed a tom at 10 yds with the bow. When I asked him what he would do different next year he said I would use a gun! This year he had the gun but we had no luck. Hunted two different spots. One spot had birds strutting each day across the property line with 3 hens but we couldn't pull him away. The other spot was strangely silent even though the land owner had seen them walking through the yard the day before we hunt We hunted hard 6 out of the 7 days but never got one close.

H season

Took the son in-law out. He and my daughter have 3 young ones and they work different shifts so they don't have daycare. It leaves little time for hunting. Friday morning a nice tom pops out on the field 150 yds east of us. He gobbles at the call but won't strut. He starts our way but turns about 80 yds out and walks off to the north gobbling everytime I called. No dice. Sat morning heard one gobble and one fly down. An hour later out behind us in the field we spot three jakes 200 yds out. We work them for 40 minutes and they finally decide to come in and the turkey season was over! Son in-law had a great time! This turkey hunting sure is fun!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
