Grainbelt
I am putting up a 4x4 post to mount a wood duck house on. I want to build a cone guard out of 26 gauge sheetmetal. According to the wood duck society I need an outer diameter of 36" and need to cut an inner circle to accommodate the post. I need the inner cicle diameter for a post 3.5" x 3.5". Any wood duck experts out there know this diameter? Thanks
Jameson
Your diameter is the diagonal length from corner to corner of your 3.5" square. A^2 plus B^2 equals C^2. So, take the square root of 3.5 squared plus 3.5 squared. I believe you will find it is is just shy of 5 inches.
Grainbelt
4.95" Thank you. We are going to take 6 houses out of the trees and put them on posts with a predetor guard on them this Memorial weekend. Our hens were all getting killed so we took the houses down this spring before nesting. Next year we should see some positive results. BLACKJACK
Our hens were all getting killed so we took the houses down this spring before nesting. Next year we should see some positive results. Thats exactly the experience that I had!!! Put 6 houses up in trees and the coons had a field day!! Now all my houses are on single poles with predator guards!!! Not every house is occupied but the one that are won't be a predator food plot. Good work Grainbelt!!!
icehousebob
I mounted my woodie houses on 6 inch diameter fence posts, about 8 feet up. Instead of cones, I used 4 feet of metal stove pipe, with the bottom about two feet above the ground. I spray painted it brown so it wouldn't stick out along the pond. I haven't found anything yet that can climb it.But isn't it a bit late for remounting the houses? I think mine are already occupied.
