Lindy Spinners vs. regular lindys

Recommended Posts

Just wondering when you use spinning rigs vs. just a normal bead and colored hook?

I just made up 40 rigs on my own. Most were just simple bead and hook combos tied to a barrel swivel that I can quickly hook into a snap swivel in front of roach weight/ bottom bouncer.

The spinners I made are all single hook for either worm leech or minnow. I have some premade mulithook ones for crawlers. The ones I made are just a bead, clevis w spinner blade, then 4-5 big beads in front of a colored hook. They are made with either 8 or 10lb flouro and not real long 3-5 feet max.

When do spinning rigs work best. Summer? When nothing else is working? Wind/calm? I mostly use the standard rigs with bead and hook, and have had good success. I want to try out some of my creations though. What speed works best for spinners. I know a good speed for the reg rigs is less that 1 mph.

Depending on water depth, what size weight do you use. I have only used 3/8 and 1/2 ounce. Want to try 1/4 to see if the baits get more play.

Thanks in advance.

Here is the way I look at it.

Lindy's are designed to be used when fish are in a negative/neutral mood.

Spinners are designed to be used when fish are in an active/feeding mood.

I ALWAYS start off fishing for active fish, and only go to a slow presentation when forced to.

I fish lindys at under .75MPH and fish spinners at over 1.0MPH, up to 2.0MPH.

When using spinners and speed it is not uncommon for me to have on a 2 oz weight in 20' of water. Keep the line at 45 degrees for best results. For a lindy, try to use as little weight as possible, Just enough to keep it on the bottom. The weight will vary greatly depending on speed and depth.

Good points from mnfishinguy.

I agree that spinners are faster and for more aggressive or scattered fish. I don't start using spinners until the post spawn transition to deeper water, and the height of the summer patterns.

I usually start with spinners around 1.5 mph, whereas livebait rigs I usually start at .5 to .8 mph. Given the speed snd the lift from the blades, you need heavier weight on spinners and 2 oz is a good size to use --- bottom bouncers and 3-way rigs work well with spinners.

Thanks for the information guys. Sounds like I need to get a few heavier weights. I bought some three way swivels and tried them, but the line kept getting tangled up. Will try the 3 way again with crankbaits, and again with heavier weight, or 2 oz. spro bucktail.

2 oz. sinkers at 2mph? Holy moly. What pound test are you using?!

Personally I use fireline crystal 14lb 6lb mono equal.

that goes to the bottom bouncer

spinners are on 12lb tst berkley xt or 12lb test cajun.

I usually use 1 1/2 oz bottom bouncers at 1.5 mph anywhere from 12-25 fow....2 ounce at 1.5 mph in 25fow or more.

I had great luck on the opener with spinners and crawlers. The surf temp was 49F when I went out. They can be great even with the cool water temps. I do agree with the others though the they that they work better with warmer water.

I use 7 ft MH casting rod with daiwa sealine counter reels. (you want something with decent sensitivity on the bottom bouncers so you can feel the tick tick of the bottom and will know if they get fouled and yet have a little give in the rod for the heavy strikes.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
