BackPackers?

Anybody else out there do backpacking trips? I've done 3 now in the last year and half. Last one was a short 11 mile overnighter about 3 weeks ago on the SHT. How much weight do you carry? I'm at about 37-40 pounds base weight before food and water which is really high. I know I need to get it lower, much for suggestions? My biggest weight gains will be in shelter, pack and sleeping bag but all come at a pretty good $$. I bought all I had on a budget so it's heavy but it works and was cost effective.

I did one S.H.T. trip with my wife before we had kids. Would love to do it again, but not with the little ones. Anyway, we did a weekend trip with 2 cars. I think we were in the 25-30 mile range. Saturday we packed up early and got to our intended campsite at around 1:30 pm. Decided we should move on to the next one. Wouldn't you know, it was 8 or 9 more miles to get to the next one. We were pretty exhausted when we finally pulled in just before supper. Our packs were a little heavy too. I think mine was pushing 50-55 and hers was around 30. No expensive equipment for us, though I could see the need if you were to do it a lot.

we looked at a 30 day wyoming backpacking trip for my son this summer. they bp the whole thing ranging some 75 miles total. their packs are weighing around 65-70 lb for everything so i would think that if you are traveling for a day or two there are things that you could drop easily. if you go to nols . org and look at their trips, they have equipment lists for every trip. good way to get an idea of what they use
