Roosting behavior?????

This time of year, do the gobblers roost by themselves or will they roost w/ other gobblers, jakes, and/or hens? I can already hear someone saying "it depends". Just looking for some general info.! grin

The place where my dad and I will be hunting next week (our 1st time hunting this property) has a lowland/swampy area w/ alot of ash and balsam trees. The landowner says he's been hearing gobbling coming from the swamp, which is about 15 acres or so.

Thanks,

Brian

From what I have noticed while the hens are nesting, the dominant gobbler has kind of wandered around in the evening looking for love and not always roosting in the same place. There is another group of toms that I usually would see in the same general area without hens that would roost together and head out their separate ways or set out in a pair in the morning. The jakes would roost together as well usually in a separate grove of trees from the bachelor toms. This hasn't been exactly the same every year and there are a lot of variables that can change stuff quick. The words that you don't want to hear are probably the best explanation though. eek The best thing to do is get out and put the birds to bed at night and if you are lucky, you can get some sort of pattern.

What I saw this week is two or three toms roosting together. Maybe one would be a jake. Often the hens were very close, sometimes right with the toms.
