I have had it both ways on Devils lake, caught perch in 8-10 feet in mid march and have caught perch in the deep 40-45 feet water in late March. Devils is kinda tricky, never really a rime or reason to the madness, here one day gone tomarrow. One thing I do know is fish in Devils are hard to find but once you do find them prepare for all out crazyness, they will be jumping out of the hole!

My take as an out of stater fishing on Devils lake. It's a great big beast to try and figure out if you don't live there and fish it reguarly. I hire a guide (pick your guides) just what I do. The daily guide fee when considering they supply everything and put me on fish is cheap. I don't have to haul anything on the 10 hour drive and know that everything is going to be there when I need it. I realize there is no guarnatee to catch fish, however, the odds raise when you go with a guide that fishes everyday and cuts the guess work out of where Waldo is hiding. I also understand many wish to be "Do it yourselfer's and realize a great deal of satisfaction from that. I public land elk and bear hunt on my own and would never hire a guide for that. But in this case, I know were the game is every year I go. DL is a big growing body of water and I can't afford to guess for several days to find waldo. Hope I don't affend anyone, just an opinion from a middle aged guy that like to fish on a great fishery once in a while on an "empty pockets budget". Hope you catch a fish of a lifetime...Best of fishing to you all.
