Screeching Mr. Heater/Cooker??

I typically use my Mr. Heater/Cooker only for heating my portable fish house. Last night, I tried to use it in the 'flat position' to fry up some fish. When the pan covered the grill, it caused an extremely loud, piercing screech. It didn't do it on the low setting, and if you pulled the pan to the side it would lessen the sound. Has anyone ever heard of this? Nothing was listed on the Mr. Heater web page.
