Red dot scope vs normal scope???

Recommended Posts

I just got a savage bolt action slug gun I am going to use for bear hunting next year and am thinking of putting a red dot on it vs a normal scope just looking for some opinions out there, and recommendations on red dots..

Thanks

As mentioned in another thread ... at least with red-dots, ya get what ya pay for ... mostly.

At which, I recommend the DOCTER ... again, IIRC, Trijicon is selling those, now. That one's closer to $350. I've had mine for about 10yr, now ... put in 2 - 3 batteries in that time ... still like the day I bought it.

I expect Aimpoints are reliable ... I bought one ... don't use it much. I think Midway has a 1x on sale this month for like $250 or so.

C-More's are another good red-dot, for around $200 ... but I don't know that I'd want one for a brush-gun ... the lens might somewhat easily get caught on a branch and be damaged.

I think if I was going to try to go cheap, I'd try the Konus 1x's from Midway ... $80, $90, and $100 depending on size. They're all rated at least 4 stars ... which, for that price, I think reflects very well.

I'm presuming you're talking about black bears? If not, I'd probably prefer a non-electronic scope ... you can get a nice shotgun scope for $100 ... more magnification than ya'd ever need for a slug.

I'd say, if all you're willing to spend is $100, get a scope ... ya'll get a lot more for your money than with a $100 red-dot. Otherwise, I think a DOCTER or an Aimpoint would last a lotta years, and work very well.
