Question

I've got a "new" auger that sat in the factory carton for several years, until I pulled it out to fire it up. It fires up just fine, but does not seem to be pulling gas down to the carb unless I push the primer bulb. The hose from the tank down is just fine - where do I look next?

If the auger was brand new it would never have had gas in it so varnishing shouldn't happen, unless the auger was returned and boxed up and resold. If it was returned you now know why.

So your carb is of the diaphragm type which the fuel pump is part of. It gets a pulse from the crank that sucks and blows which operates the pump. Diaphragms do go bad with age but usually not that soon. Diaphragms dry out also during storage.

Keep it running by priming the engine. That will give the fuel/oil time to lube the walls giving the pump a better pulse and the give the diaphragms time to come alive. Also inside the stack and diaphragms is a flapper valve that can get dry or sticky, keeping it running while priming will help those flapper valves out too. Needle and seat are make from brass. They can oxidize from impurities in air or old fuel making them stick or clog. Some needles have a rubber tip that if left to make contact for years of non use can cause them to stick. Again run the auger while priming they usually take off on their own after a while. Last resort is a cleaning and new carb kit.
