2006 mercury marquis

Recommended Posts

Well I have 2006 mercury marquis. The problem is that last year I was have problems with the fuel gauge. It was slowly going up and it was random. I went to the dealer and they replaced the cluster. It worked for the time being. It started acting up again so I went back to see if that specific part was under warranty. It was...The probems is that I thought it was the sending unit the whole time and they didn't. Now the gauge takes a while to go to the full positon after I fill up every time. They said if its not the cluster then I would have to pay 100 bucks to diagnose the problem. I thought I would give the history first. What do you guys think it is?? cluser or sending unit

It should be pretty easy to see if the cluster is working with a variable resistor in series with the signal wire to the sending unit. If the gauge responds to the different resistance values in a normal fashion than I would have to say the sending unit.

You wouldn't think that the cluster would be bad again?

Have had the exact same problem on my wife's 06 Grand Marquis. Dealer said there is a higher level of sulfer in some brands of gas. It builds up on the sending unit. Was told to try some Techron injector cleaner in the tank. Only use that brand. I didn't believe him until I tried it. It has worked a couple times. My son has had the same problem with a Taurus. Same solution. Try a different brand of gas after you do this.

I put the trechron in there. I guess that what ford recommened. and it istead of being random,It does it all the time.I thought it was the sending unit from day one. They hooked it up to the "computer" and it coded something in the cluster. Since my warranty has run out it sounded like if it happened to be the sending unit they wouldn't pay for it. I don't have the extra $$ to have them hook it up and find out if its the cluster or not. I haven't had good luck with clusters. I had them replaced in my last car also
