Ice Dam Removal

not sure about the shingle deteriorating from the use of salt but i would not doubt it. as far as warranty goes, if your shingles are falling apart and you have a representative from the company out and he asks if you've ever salted your rooftop, it may cause the warranty to be voided.

I would guess it's a lot cheaper to replace some shingles than an entire water damaged wall.. cool

My solution for ice dams on my parents' house was to take a piece of 3/4" rigid copper pipe and spiral wrap heat tape around it. Lay the pipe vertically on the ice dam, plug it in, and walk away - it will melt a valley down into the dam so the water can run off...

It all comes down to proper soffit/roof venting. If your roof is properly vented you won't have the ice dam problems or the gutter problems for that matter. If you go to the HSOforum www dot gaf dot you know what, they have completely redone their site and there is a lot of helpful information on there. As far as putting salt on the roof - they do sell a product for ice dams, call a supply house for roofing and they will point you in the right direction - don't use regular sidewalk salt as it can discolor your shingles and/or worse.

Another thing for those of you with ice dams is to check the insulation in your attic and make sure the insulation is not blocking your soffit venting.

I will elaborate more on this post if anybody is interested.
