Tow Rope

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to purchase a new tow rope. I'm sick of the cheap 10 dollar ones that are junk and dont get the job done. I want something I can hook up and jerk a vehicle out without having to worry about breaking the rope, any advice would be great.

Thanks

6 inch is way overkill for a pickup. You want the strap to stretch some when you tug to absorb the jerk. I used a 6 inch which is rated for 54000 pounds with our tandem tow truck pulling 20,000 to sometimes even 40,000 lb. trucks. Never broke it in several years. I keep a 25 ft 2 inch in my truck and thats rated for 20,000lbs.

You can pick up a nice 3 inch good for 27,000 for about 50 bucks online.

I got a 25k lb tow strap at fleet farm for about 30 bucks and it has worked great for me. Never had anything it wont pull out and it has been used a lot.

Its a good idea to get a actual strap, that way you can give a little jerk and it acts like a rubber band instead of just snapping.

As you would guess the higher the rating the better.

ive broken more than my far share of those whimpy 2in. straps in my day that ive grown wiser and steppd up to the big league!

After running a recovery rig for 30 plus years pulling single axles, tandems and sometimes semis', (often having to repair the vehicles I tow), I cant think of a bigger league. Take my word for it, you want the strap to break before the vehicle does. If a 27,000 lb strap wont pull a pickup loose you need more help than a bigger strap.

Yeah I snapped a 6" strap this fall, but I guess I was trying to pull a stuck combine out with a 4-wheel drive tractor. grin I have a tow strap in the truck that I have about a 2' chain looped though one of the loops, connected with a chain coupling with a chain hook on the chain. I use the chain hook on cars, because there isn't alot to tie to on a car. I also have an extra reciever that I use with a clevis so I don't have to worry about the strap coming off the ball.

Funny this came up. I pulled a couple high school kids out of a snowbank tonght with my 25k strap and it did just fine. It didn't want to budge just pulling outright but with a little jerk, their truck pulled right out. I was laughing to myself because I saw this thread earlier today.
