Flasher battery hissing

EBass

Question

The battery is 2 years old. Used my vex on Sun and charged it last night. It was on the charger for a mere 2 hours when I heard hissing. I put my ear closer and it was hissing from the battery. I took it off the charger and the hissing slowly went away. Q - is my battery shot?

could be a leak. It is supposed to be sealed but they build pressure inside when charging. If it leaks it would hiss as the gas escapes. Mix up some dawn dish soap and water so it is good an soapy. apply solution to the battery all over it when it is hissing. You should see bubbles comming from it if it is leaking. It would likely be leaking at one of the seams or around one of the terminals.

If it is leaking you could use some epoxy like JB weld to seal it.

Sounds like your cooking the battery. I'd try a new charger it might not be turning off at full charge. You might get the battery to seal up with jb-weld but the battery probably wont last much longer. For some reason though your over charging (that's what the hissing is, it's getting the battery to hot) thats probably what broke the seal. I drive truck for a living and every now and then I'll cook a battery usually because the regulator goes bad in the alternator and it over charges the batteries. Smells like rotten eggs and you can hear them sizzlin' if they're hot enough. Battery's probably shot either way though.
