rusty rapala
I have my jigging rods ready for the season but I need some advice as to how to rig a basic tip up for walleyes. I haven't used them in the past and need some advice. Thanks!
Dooley87
fill your spool with regular tip up line just like normal then instead of a wire leader or quick strike rig tie on a mono leader, walleyes seem more timid about hiting a wire leader vs a mono leader, I usually go with around 2-3 feet of 6 or 8 lb mono attatch the mono to the tip up line with a small barrel swivel and this is were i usually place a split shot or two right above the swivel on the tip up line. here in mn you can't tie a treble hook straight to your line either, it has to be part of a "lure" but i love the hook up abilities of a treble vs a single hook as long as you keep a good watch on your tip ups and a fish cant swallow the hook, you can get around the treble hook law by placing a small bead and a small spinner above the treble hook cause it is considered a lure. hook a small sucker right through the back so that it will sit horizontally in the water like it normally would, find a weed edge and place the tip up right off the weed edge about a foot or two off the bottom and you should be set. bgreen82
is that hook going parallel or perpendicular with fish? i.e. do you hook it from back to front or from the side and up.
Ryan84*
perpendicular is what i do. seems to work.

Dooley87
perpendicular or side and up and try to hook as little of the minnow as possible, they seem to swim and wiggle better that way but make sure you hook enough so they don't swim off, if you go too far down the side of the minnow you will hit their lateral line and pretty much paralyze them so they aren't very livley, right under the back is the best. DAWBSKI
I do the same thing exept I use a buckshot rattle jig (the smallest one) so when the sucker or shinner is shaking around it will rattle to. Seems to have increased the amount of fish I get on the tip-up. This same method works great for pike also just put a wire leader on instead of mono.
