Thanks Jameson. I did some research after reading your reply and indeed they are Shaggy Manes. My first find of an edible mushroom. That lone mushroom is 8" tall but a little past its prime from what I've read. Oh well, I'll gather some of the smaller ones and give them a shot.

Be careful when targeting the Shaggy Mane..... they belong to the family of ink caps and don't last much longer than a day after being harvested, as they turn into a pile of slimy black goo.

Also, there's the 'Tipler's Bane' that looks VERY similar to the shaggy mane. It can make you VERY sick if you eat the mushroom and consume ANY amount of alcohol within 3 days. It basically disables your body's ability to process liquor! Not good!

Some of the easiest to ID wild mushrooms are quite safe really. Go to google and do a search for 'edible mushrooms'. The first link that pulls up is a great resource to help in IDing some of the best wild mushrooms out there. It also thoroughly details every look-alike which is great too!!

It pays to be very careful. If you are not sure, don't eat it.

A friend ran afoul of tipler's bane some years ago. A couple of others of us who also ate it had no problems with alcohol. Some of the reactions to various mushrooms vary from person to person.
