ad1823
Hi, I'm having problems with my Empire Direct Vent furnace in my ice house. I bought the ice house last year, and have never gotten the furnace to work. The pilot will light and stay lit, but when I try to turn on the main burner, it will light, but quickly blows out along with the pilot. I don't know much about these furnaces, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
jerkbait
Sounds to me like it is a lack of oxygen, Empire has a fresh air intake along with the exhuast. My guess is that the is pluggeed somewhere. I have heard of people have theirs plugged with lady bugs, birds nest, cobwebs and so on. Start there and see what you find. Nutty Fisherman
If nothing is pluged. Try a new thermo coupler, thats what mine did before I put the coupler in.

crappiekid
DONT P-SS around and take it to a service center. If you dont know what you are doing you may end up purchasing several parts and never get to root cause. My dad went through the same thing. Where abouts do you live??? Good luck. This is too dangerous to mess around with as well if you stay overnight or have kids!!!
RebelSS
Jerkbait, nutty, and Dustin may all be right..it could be any of those things. I'll put my .02 worth on the pilot assembly or flame sensor. You may have to disassemble the pilot assembly or check the wiring to the sensor. A poor ground or loose wire causes this problem a lot. I'd check all your wiring first, then proceed with all the other things listed.

I have to agree with crappiekid on this...if it isn't an OBVIOUS problem like the ones listed,go to a QUALIFIED tech! This isn't something to mess with..I can't stress that enough. In my line of work, I've seen the worst end result...not something you ever forget. LindellProStaf
There were some recalls too. Get your ser. # and call it in to Empire. Some of the gas valves were the problem. I tried to repair a few when I was in the business and no matter what I did it wouldn't work right. They finally gave me a list of the recalled sr. # s. ad1823
Hi, Thank you for all the input. I installed a new thermopile, and still had the same issue. I ended taking the whole thing apart to learn that it had not been vented properly to begin with. As many of you pointed out, this is way to dangerous for me to tackle on my own. Does anyone know of a good heating/HVAC/furnace guy around the Twin Cities that may be able to vent it properly? Again, I appreciate your help! pikechaser
How is it not vented right? It has a concentric vent, meaning the vent pipe is double wall(pipe within a pipe)..one section is air intake, the other is exhaust...should be pretty straightforward..their owners manual has pretty decent instructions...if the pilot lites & holds in..theres nothing wrong with the thermopile. definitely snds like an air flow issue...you would want to make sure the connections are sealed..if they are not that will give you trouble.. minnbowhunter
Mikes Propane in St Paul 770-9448 They know everything there is to know about propane except for maybe Hank Hill, "I sell propane and propane accessories"
ad1823
They didn't use the normal concentric venting. They vented the smaller exhaust straight out behind the furnace, but then tried to vent the larger intake several inches higher through a seperate vent. They didn't use any ducting on the intake so I don't think it is getting the proper air intake. Unfortunately, the builder of the fish house has since gone out of business. I'm going to give Mike's Propane a shot. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!
