French lake muskies????

Anyone know when the muskies start turning on, we will only be able to fish there once so the most detailed you could be would be GREAT! we went there last year but i think it was too early in the year. it was all green and mucky then, but i keep hearing how great a muskie lake that place is in the fall, but what time?

and what lures should we be fishing with and should we be fishing in the shallows or off that giant bar. when does it turnover? or should we just try going to waconia?

If you will only be there once I would worry about the local conditions while you were there and a few days previous to your day.

Look at wind, air & water temps, whether its going to be pre/post frontal, etc...

That being said, I used to fish it quite a bit in October. Its nice because the water cleans up and you should have the lake nearly to yourself. We have done well nearly anywhere on the lake, seriously, but some there are some better spots than others. Try the T-bar just to right of the access or spots along the NW shoreline. For baits, I would go with Mag Dawgs, smaller bucktails, or a maybe un-conventional topwater bait in October. If you are fishing shoreline, I don't think there is a bad spot on the lake, just some that are 'better'.

Maybe others can chime in too, I haven't been there in October in a year...

Bulldawgs are great, I've seen more follows on them this year than any other lure. I fish 'em pretty much just straight, speed of retrieval is increased if I'm fishing shallow, otherwise I fish them pretty slow.

Colors.. well that is always debatable, but it's hard to go wrong with most colors.

All of the bulldawg colors are effective. But for what it's worth, Walleye is the best selling color. This doesn't mean the fish like it the best (sometimes they do, sometimes they want something else). But it's definitely an effective color.

crix, I've had my best luck on dawgs by jerking or ripping them. But any retrieve will work. If you aren't seeing fish on them, try a different retrieve. You can straight retrieve them, jig them, jerk them, rip them, burn them. I know a few guys that throw bulldawgs or other similar baits well over 50% of the time from opener to ice up and their results speak for themselves.

I have read posts from others that say to launch at the resort on French. I did a search on the web, came up with Knippel's Resort on French, but when I call them, I get a "sorry, this number had been disconnected".

Anybody know if this is the resort.., are they closed for the season.., if so.., how do you put in your rig on French? I have a larger boat, a Ranger, and I would like to fish French this fall. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Have a map! The Two landings are not easy to find the first time.

I've seen lakes with less boat traffic and less stocking that have more and better public landings. I find it odd that the DNR counts on a private pay landing for access to a lake like this! Does the owner of Hoys have state position?

the last time we were there we barley got on at hoys

But the dnr was diggin out the public access to make it better for bigger boats

we fish from a stratos bass boat and almost couldn't get it on french

Thanks guys for the help. I am thinking I might just pass this up. God I HATE fighting to get a rig back on the trailer. Glass-boats and bunk-trailers are not conducive to shallow-launches. Or "uneven" launches for that matter. I fish a spot in WI that the launch drops BAD to one side, right at the spot you need to stop to get her up on the trailer. Plunk.., and the trailer is at a 15-degree angle, listing badly to the right. Sometimes it doesn't run up true, and I have to then back her in and out and in and out to line her up.

That is the one thing about aluminum-boats and roller-trailers that I miss!!!!! Get 'em started and crank 'em up. You ain't gonna do that with a big glass boat!!!!!!

Crix, when were you there last.., when was the DNR dredging the public access? I wonder if that is a go now???

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
