Bent Axle

syd2nd

Question

I have a Sled Bed trailer with a bent axle. The axle has torsion bars and I wondering if I have to buy a new axle with the torsions on or if I can just buy a new axle and attach the old torsions. By the way, the reason I thought I had a bent axle is because the wheels were wearing out on the inside too fast and I put a level on it. It was hightest in the middle? That doesn't make sense to me.

syd2nd, The axle will be highest in the middle, that's how they put the camber on the wheels. The fact that your tires are wearing on the inside doesn't necessarily mean your axle is bent. Your bearings could be too loose, allowing the hub to tilt. IF your torsion axle is bent, there's not too much that can be done short of replacing it and that's NOT cheap!! This last spring I helped a buddy replace his to the tune of ~$540 and that was AXLE only, no hubs! Definitely take it into a shop and let them look it over. Unless you've grossly overloaded your trailer, it does take some effort to bend them. Phred52

Thank you for the advice. I didn't realize the axle was highest in the middle, I thought it should be straight. I will take it into town and have it checked out. Thanks, I really appreciate it.
