throttle cables???

So, my brother and i decided to buy a starter boat. Used 14ft aluminum w/console steering and a 40 horse Merc on it. We took it out on Sunday and got her running...top speed 28mph. The only thing we found that didn't seem right was when we wanted to open it up, we had to really crank down hard on the throttle. Is there a fix for that? I have driven other boats with console steering and it has never been that hard to accelerate. I could almost have the lever buried and I was still idiling. I had to really force it down to get it to accelerate any. Any thoughts? I'd like to try to fix it myself it all possible rather than take it in somewhere. Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the purchase!

It sounds like it's either way out of adjustment, or there's an issue on the control box end or under the hood.

I'd start with under the hood. While someone else moves the control box lever, watch the linkage at the motor. Does it start moving as soon as the lever is pressed, or is it lagging?

If it's lagging it could be in the control box... remove it from the gunwale of your boat and pull the lower cover off on the backside and repeat the same process.

Good Luck!
