Lowrance X25 Sonar Trouble

My dad has a Lowrance X25 and has trouble with the sonar reading properly quite often. The depth will start flashing and not read for quite some time. I don’t know the exact circumstances but was wondering if anyone had any advice… He has tried a factory reset and cleaning the battery terminals, which he was told may help.

Does the transducer ever work, like in deeper water with a clean hard bottom ---- is it only shallow water and thick weeds that are giving it problems? If it's never working like it should then it sounds like a new transducer is in order.
