Backyard Breeding definition?

Labs..your right about the linebreeding. Chessies gene pool got pretty small from so much line breeding from a select few outstanding stud dogs. It is starting to get more outcrosses, but there are a few past studs you would have a hard time not finding in most higher end breedings.

I agree that you might not actually improve the breed with your breeding, but I think its important to at least have that as a goal...to improve or maintain the high quality of the breed. Do not just breed any old dog...Look for the traits that you would like to add into your line. You can't gaurantee what kind of pups you will produce, but can try to sway it in your favor.

That to me is the definition of a backyard breeding... 'someone who breeds indisciminatley and WITHOUT regard to the breed'.

I think this quote is a fair resemblance to what my thoughts are on the what a definition of this would be. One details to this I will add is that IMO not having all the proper health clearances and papers would be considered indiscriminate breeding and I would consider those backyard breeders. I see too much of this out there and it just drives me nuts.

I assume you are talking about 'Chase'. Believe it or not, I actually named that dog and had my hand over him several times in his upbringing and early training prior to my friends selling him to Roger Reopelle. Chase was quite the dog. and a fair assessment of my thoughts on line breeding.

LABS, did Roger do anything with the dog after he got him? Roger was a wonderful man and a VERY good trainer.

"Backyard breeders" will be kennel blind and find a way to justify ;

A)Breeding dogs that should not be bred in the 1st place & then;

Allowing poor quality pups into the market place vs culling both them and the parents that produced them.

It is harsh but the way breeds improve.

As for selling; I'd give pups to the right owners. Ones that would do right by the dogs and be able to give me accurate unbiased feedback on how their dogs developed.
