Is transom saver necessary?

I bought a boat with an outboard motor for the fist time this year (140hp) . Is a transom saver necessary. I usually trailer less than 30 miles each way but occasionaly make longer trips ( to red lake...)

The general consensus of all the previous threads is "why take the chance of doing thousands of dollars in damage to your boat when you can buy one of these things for 30 to 50 bucks."
